Parkville was founded as a steamboat landing on the Missouri River in 1838, shortly after the Platte Purchase opened up land in northwestern Missouri. It later lost its status as dominant city in the region when the Hannibal Bridge, the first bridge across the Missouri River, opened in nearby Kansas City.
