The Temple Lot was said by Joseph Smith to be the center of New Jerusalem and believed by early adherents to be the side of the Garden of Eden.
The Stone Church was completed in 1888 as the headquarters of one of a number of LDS churches in the area.
Located in the center of Independence, it was here that Harry S. Truman was county judge in the early 1920s. County offices have since moved away and the new county courthouse is in downtown Kansas City.
